Are Ultracet And Meftal Spas Intake Safe When Suffering From Pancreatic Cancer?
My mother, aged 72 years, has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and Liver Metastatis. Doctors have ruled out any chemo or radiotherapy, since it is advance stage. We are giving her some alternate treatment. She takes Ultracet (around 02 tablets per day) and Meftal Spas (around 01 tablet per day) as painkiller. Please let me know whether the painkillers will have adverse side effects. Regards.
Pain killers to be given after food
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Sorry to hear that your mother is having Pancreatic cancer with liver metastasis. I have worked in a cancer institute for 3 years and have come across many patients fighting pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately the cancer seems to have spread to the liver. I hope a biopsy diagnosis has been made to confirm cancer. Pancreatic cancer is supposed to spread very fast by surgery and also chemotherapy or radiotherapy reduces the patients quality of life. In most situations a patient of pancreatic cancer survives from 6 months to a year. We make best efforts to give such patients a pain free existence.
In the accompanying reports, the CT scan report is significant as it shows presence of growth in pancreas and the liver also shows areas where the probable cancer has spread. CA19-9 (carbohydrate antigen 19-9, also called cancer antigen 19-9) is a tumor marker that is used primarily in the management of pancreatic cancer. This is raised in many pancreatic cancer patients.
Coming to your specific question on Ultracet (Tramadol and Acetaminophen) and Meftal spas (Dicycloverine), they will not cause any potential risk to her health. The Ultracet must be taken after food. If she has burning in stomach a medication like pantoprazole or ranitidine may be given before food in morning to decrease acidity. The cancer is far more destructive than the pain killers. Let her take adequate pain killers under supervision of palliative care physicians.
My prayers to keep her pain free even in this delicate situation.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
