Posted on Thu, 19 Mar 2015
Question: I have dyslexia and get car sickness very easily, I have read on the internet that antihistamines will help with this. I am 51 years old and have struggled with this all my life. Do you agree with this true and if so, what kind of antihistamine do you recommend? Also, what kind of therapy do you recommend for dyslexia, I have read on the internet about many types and am confused. Also, I am on a fixed income, so cannot afford expensive therapy. Thank you for any help you can give, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Secial counseling, training & education are helpful

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing to us.

I need some clarification. Dyslexia is a learning disorder. There are problems in writing , reading and speaking. It is present in childhood. If it continues to adulthood, it is really difficut to treat. No relation of car sickness with dyslexia. And no role of antihistamine at all.Special counseling, education and training are main modalities of the treatment of dyslexia.

Meclizine is useful in vertigo and motion sickness and it is an antihistaminic drug.

Yes meclizine is useful in car sickness. It is also called motion sickness. It occurs due to problem in inner ear/cochlea.You can continue same medicine under your doctor's guidance.

Hope I have answered yor query, I will be happy to help further. Please revert back to me with clarification regarding dyslexia.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.

When I go on a 5 hour car ride, it takes a week to recover. Symptoms include fatigue, vertigo, motion sickness. What is this related to? I get these symptoms even if I am the one driving the car. I have experienced this repeatedly since childhood, so I know it's not a virus. Thank you for helping me understand this problem, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Common problem, consult ENT surgeon, Prophylactic medicine should be taken

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for follow up.

Motion sickness is very common problem. Many people suffer form this. Severity varies. Main cause for this lies in vestibular apparatus(semicircular canals in inner ears). Disturbance in this canals causes false sensations in cerebellum(part of brain which is responsible for balancing of body). This leads to vertigo, dizziness and vomiting.Sometime false signals continue for long as well as vomiting and secondary dehydration lead to fatigue.

There is no permanent cure in many cases. Prophylactic/preventive approach should be used. Before 1 hour of driving or any other activity which leads to motion sickness one should take antihistaminic medicine like meclizine or antidopaminergic like promethazine. This will prevent motion sickness in most of the cases.

In your case problem is since childhood so diagnosis is almost confirmed that it is motion sickness. Just consult ENT surgeon for evaluation once. It will help to rule out any other specific cause if it is there.

Hope this answer is helpful.
