Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Repeated Use Of Betnesol During Pregnancy Cause Harm?
I m in my 33rd week of pregnancy. So far everything has been normal and my baby weighs 2kgs in the womb. The Dr. had asked me to keep a foetal kick count yesterday on an hourly basis. Mostly the kicking averaged between 10-15 kicks per hour but when I lied down in the evening my baby kept kicking me softly and repeatedly until I changed positions. (It has been doing so normally as well) This was about 95 kicks yesterday. Learning this my doc has asked me to take Betnesaol injections 2 doses of 12 mg 12 hrs apart on a weekly basis and prescribed 0.5mg of Betnesol tablets. I did some research on the net and learnt that repeated doses of this steroid have no added advantage and can infact lead to learning disorders as the baby grows up. What do I do??
Betnesol contains betamethasone that belongs to the group of medications known as steroids or corticosteroids is used in the treatment of various inflammatory conditions like arthritis, osteoarthritis, allergic reactions, asthma, psoriasis, SLE etc. Betnesol can be used if someone is at high risk for preterm delivery or has threatened preterm labor. This medication also can be used to speed up the development of lung in preterm babies by the release of surfactant. But this medication is given during pregnancy only if there is no alternative medical treatment available or only when its benefits outweigh the risks to the mother or fetus. If you have any doubt then you can consult your doctor for further evaluation.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
