Are Gastroesophageal Reflex Actions Affected After Fundoplication Surgery?
Nothing changes in case of vomiting or belching.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Thank you for the query.
Actually nothing really changes in case of vomiting or belching. This reflex actions remain untouched.
Fundoplication surgery is nothing more than stitching fundus (its just a part of the stomach) to the diaphragm, so it does not get inside the chest and so the foods do not get back to the esophagus. But it does not mean that the person can not belch or vomit.
After fundoplication, stomach can hold foods in normal conditions (when there is not much pressure inside). However, in case of belching or vomiting, pressure in the stomach rises so the foods and/or air can get back to the esophagus and throat.
Fundoplication is very effective procedure especially in case of acid reflux. It can set the patient free from the symptoms right after the surgery.
Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
