Are Low Blood Levels And Positive D-dimer Test An Indication Of Myeloid Leukemia?

default
Posted on Thu, 15 Sep 2016
Question: I'm 65 year old female with osteosarcoma. I've had chemo, radiation, proton therapy and more chemo about a year ago. Doctors believe I have secondary acute myeloid leukemia. All of my blood counts are critically low and my d dimer was elevated. I'm looking for a 2nd opinion, still pending bone marrow biopsy results. Also what is the prognosis for someone with secondary AML?

Brief Answer:
If acute myeloid leukemia is suspected then go for bone marrow examination.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.

You have history of osteosarcoma and chemotherapy. So there is chance of secondary acute myeloid leukemia. In very early phase of leukemia total wbc count may be very low with blast cells in blood. Low platelets count is common in leukemia.

So if they are suspecting acute myeloid leukemia then you should go for bone marrow examination as early as possible.

Elevated D dimer can be due to deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, malignancy and other reason. you have chest pain and shortness of breath so it suggest pulmonary embolism. You need urgent treatment for that.

Prognosis of secondary acute myeloid leukemia is unfavourable. It is difficult to treat. Still it depends on type of leukemia.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic.

Wish you very good health.
