Are Medicines Atenolol, Amlodipine And Losartan Ideal Prescriptions For High BP?
Question: My mother in law visiting from Germany is currently taking 3 different medications for blood pressure. Atendol 50mg twice a day, amlodipin 5mg only at night & losartan 50mg morning & night. This seems like alot of medication for blood pressure. She has an overactive thyroid. Can u give any indication if this is normal??

It is often the case that people require multiple medications to control their blood pressure. Keeping blood pressure in the normal range decreases the risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure. Some people are easily controlled on one medication but other people have very resistant hypertension and I have had some patients require up to 5 medications to control their blood pressure. Her medications are a good combination. She is not at the maximum dose of any of the medications. Doctors often add low doses of several medications to control the blood pressure but avoid side effects of pushing any one medication to the maximum dose. This can be cumbersome by needing to take multiple pills but can avoid some severe side effects like fatigue that may occur when a single medication is pushed to the maximum dose. If her blood pressure is well controlled on these medications then I would not be concerned at all.
