Are Symptoms For Pregnancy Seen After Fertilization?
Question: Hello. Try to keep it short. I have been on Metformin to assist in fertility. For two weeks had symptoms of pregnancy and now 5 d prior to menstruation all symptoms are gone. Does this mean we're able to have an egg fertilized but not implant? Hx: healthy sone born 2 1/2 yrs ago, early miscarriage 6 months ago @ approximately 5-6 weeks. 41 year old married woman, slightly overweight. Thank you....Heartbroken

Hello dear, welcome to healthcare magic.I understand your concern.
In my opinion symptoms of pregnancy start after 2 weeks after missed period ie at 6 weeks in regular cycles.Symptoms are seen after implantation but not at fertilization.
I need further information like:-
1)Do you have PCOD and are you on treatment?
2)Any thyroid and prolactin hormone abnormalities?
3)Are you taking infertility treatment?
4)What was your last menstrual period date?
5)Are your cycles regular?
Kindly provide me the information and I am ready for further discussion.

Hello Dr. Myaka,
Thank you so much for responding. I will answer as best I can in accordance to your posted queries.
1) I have been told I have PCOD by a fertility specialist, but have never had any testing. She concluded this dx by hx and appearance.
2) No thyroid or prolactin hormone concerns that I am aware of
3) I have recently restarted Metformin.
4) LMP December 8, 2014. Pregnancy symptoms: extremely swollen breasts, nausea, mild fatigue started approx Dec. 27 ending approx. XXXXXXX 3. Next menstrual cycle "should be" Approx XXXXXXX 8.
5) On Metformin my cycles are regulated at 29-30 day.
I had similar symptoms as noted in # 4 about 6 months ago, where we had a positive hpt, but approx a week after the positive we had a miscarriage, confirmed by physician. I understand that this concern may be premature or even unwarranted, but as I am 40 and husband is younger, it crushes our hopes when I think I have the right symptoms only to have them completely disappear. I do appreciate your willingness to discuss, as at present we are feeling crushed. Thank you so very much!

Brief Answer:
It is too early to feel symptoms of pregnancy
Detailed Answer:
Dear madam,I got your information.Iam sorry for your condition. It is good to know that your cycles are regular.
In my opinion as your expected period is on 8th January it is too early to experience pregnancy symptoms. As I said symptoms are felt 2 weeks after missed period with pregnancy test positive. The symptoms might be due to stress regarding the pregnancy.
Metformin is prescribed in PCOD.Though PCOD can be diagnosed by history ultrasound is essential to confirm.
Thyroid abnormalities and increased prolactin levels are associated with infertility and miscarriages.
So I suggest you to get the above investigations done after discussing with your doctor.
Dont worry with appropriate treatment like thyroid hormone supplementation in hypothyroidism and medicines to decrease the prolactin levels they come down to normal level.
Another first and most important thing is weight reduction.Because overweight alone or in association with PCOD causes hormonal imbalance leading to infertility. So adopt healthy lifestyle like exercise daily and take low calorie nutritious food.
Dont worry madam if you dont conceive by normal methods there are methods like artificial insemination and artificial reproductive technique(ART).ART is the last resort.Iam not saying you might need them but just giving you the information.
Anxiety also is a important factor which causes infertility. So leave away anxiety and have faith and be relaxed.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to ask any more queries.
