Are The White Spots On The Tongue Due To Dentures?

Question: Hi there its actually concerning my mum , she is five foot 4 weighs around 13 stone and is 52years old . she got dentures 5 weeks ago and could not keep them in they were making her boak and gag , alot she hardly keeps them in now execpt for in puclic places and at her work , a couple of weeks after she got her teeth out she discovered two small whitle spots in the middle of her tounge she went to her doctor who referred her to oral clinic but we called this morning and he has only put her down for a routine check :/ which will not be till augast now the little white things have disappered and her tounge looks ok now but there is a very very small one occuring in the exact same spot :( she said her tounge was bleeding slighty the other mornin and now she also feels she has something stuck in her throat ? can u please help we are all very worried ? thank you :)

Thanks for the query.

White spot on the tongue can be many things like candidiasis, leukoplakia , oral lichen planus, apthous ulceration and many other.

Most common cause in your case could be traumatic ulcer (due to dentures) or candidiasis.

Consult an ENT specialist at the earliest for the feeling of choke up of throat.

I would like to few more things as this will help me in suggesting you better:
1. Is her denture ill fitting loose?
2. Are the white lesions painful/symptomatic?

Oral candidiasis can get wiped off and may lead to slight bleeding(as described by you).

The following measures can help you:
1. Use clotrimazole oral paint twice daily.
2. Ask her to maintain good oral /dental hygiene.
3. Betadine mouth wash twice daily would help.

Go to Emergency dept for throat complaints if they are getting severe.

hi thank you very much we were just very concerned it may be cancer :( Her dentures are very ill fitting they are extremly loose all the time unless she uses poli grip ect , she always had very good oral hygeine and actually never needed the dentist for 22 years , the reason she got these 4 teeth out front (top) was one was sitting back a bit and a little loose , as for the pain she said its sore sometimes but a few weeks ago she felt her tounge very tingili, and also sometimes feels numb ? and her throat has just occured last few days and she says she feels as though she has a lump of chicken stuck . i have researched and researched this i came up with canker sores ? its just very frustrating not knowing , thank you very much for the help .

Thanks for the follow up.

Get the dentures corrected.
Canker sores are a common form of mouth ulcer(Apthous ulcer). They may occur with viral infections. In some cases, the cause cannot be determined.
You can use triamcinolone mouth gel on ulcer if they are painful.

Get her examined for throat pain.
