Baby Urinating Once, Passing Stool Frequently
Thanks for posting your query. A newborn may urinate only once in his first 24 hours. But by day six, urinating eight to 10 times a day is common. Since your baby is just 5 days old, even if he is urinating once, it is not abnormal. This is because after delivery the first milk, the colostrum, is very nutritious but scarce, so during the first couple of days the baby won't pee much at all. After a few days of birth, the mammary glnads start producing milk in sufficient quantities and hence the rate of urinating increases.
However if after 1 week of birth, the frequency of urination does not increase or there are any signs of like fever, poor appetite, irritability, vomiting or dark urine then get an examination done by his pediatrician. Causes like vesicoureteral reflux, Ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, bladder outlet obstruction, posterior urethral valves and ureterocele need to be ruled out.
Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.
Wishing you good health.
