Bacterial Infection In Throat, Sore Throat, Had SIBO, Leaky Gut, Cervical Cancer, Enterobacter Cloacae Complex, Took Clarithromycin

Question: Hi,
I have had a bacterial infection in my throat, on and off for 5 weeks. Two weeks ago I tested a 3+ Enterobacter Cloacae complex.
Some days I am fine, but then I get a very painful sore throat again. Today my left side of my throat and ear is really hurting. Should I take the Clarithromyacin that is prescribed? 500mg twice a day? I also have intestinal issues (SIBO and LEaky Gut) and was treated for early stage cervical cancer. I had 3 operations and took 4 doses of antibiotics during that period.

So, I am trying to get my immune system back up on track as well as healing this naturally if I can.

Thanks,
XXXXXXX

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

Your immune system being weak is one of the reasons for your repeatedly falling sick and can also be the cause for the repeated sore throat infection. Enterobacter cloacae is a gram negative anaerobic organism and is often associated with urinary tract and respiratory tract infections. Treatment with cefepime and gentamicin has been reported.

It is true that Clarithyromycin is very good for respiratory tract infections especially the upper respiratory tract infections, but before taking a course of this antibiotic, it is better to get a throat culture done which reports the sensitivity of the organism to Clarithyromycin and other antibiotics.

Only if the infecting organism is susceptible to Clarithromycin, will it give positive results. Throat culture has to be done before taking any antibiotic and if sensitivity comes to Cefepime, then this antibiotics has to be started.

In addition, drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and use over-the-counter throat lozenges. Salt water gargle is also a good way to relieve a sore throat. In addition, take like ibuprofen and paracetamol (acetaminophen) after consulting your general physician. Sucking hard candies and ginger lemon tea and inhaling steam would also help.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions then please do post us. Wishing you good health.

Hi,

The Dr. did do throat cultures and I have the reports here. I did one a month ago and another 2 weeks ago. The result from the last one is:
3+ Enterobacter Cloacae Complex and Normal Respiratory Flora, No beta Hemolytic Strep Group A, Group B, Group C or Group G isolated.

What did you mean when you said, "it is better to get a throat culture done which reports the sensitivity of the organism to Clarithyromycin and other antibiotics. "

Is it something different than the throat culture I already had done? IF so, where do I do that?

Also, "Treatment with cefepime and gentamicin has been reported" What are these? Antibiotics?

Is it a problem to try to treat it naturally for a bit longer considering I've already had it for 5 weeks on and off with no symptoms but a very sore throat. I was thinking of trying a holistic dr. first, but don't want to wait any longer if it's possibly causing other problems in my body. Is it a XXXXXXX bacteria?

All of this is extra important because I am trying to build my immune system back up to fight any chance of recurrence. I just had my last surgery January 6th

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

The throat culture reports clearly states Enterobacter cloacae as the infectious agent but it is not mentioning the antibiotics to which it is sensitive.

It is not a different test it is same thing but when a culture report is given, along with the infectious agent, a list of the antibiotics to which the microorganism is sensitive is also mentioned and then these antibiotics are prescribed. The antibiotics to which the infectious agent is resistant are also mentioned and then they are often avoided.

So you should check out the culture report whether it is mentioning the antibiotics to which the infectious agent is sensitive and then you should get these antibiotics prescribed.

Cefepime and gentamycin are antibiotics and are the drugs of choice for enterobacter cloacae. If your culture sensitivity report shows sensitivity to these antibiotics then you should preferably get them prescribed.

Enterobacter cloacae is the most common Enterobacter species that can cause diseases in humans. It belongs to BioHazard Level 1 meaning the least XXXXXXX
