Can Bisoprolol Be Taken In Place Of Metroprolol?

Posted on Thu, 8 Jun 2017
Question: My 85 year old mother has been prescribed metroprolol 25 mg daily. Within 24 hours she reacted badly by becoming delirious and her skin was itching all over. She was prescribed the medication for AFib that came on suddenly with stress and anxiety. She will not take another dose.

Would bisoprolol be a better choice in controlling the AFib?

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear

After going through the medical details provided by you of your mother I would like to tell you that she probably had developed allergic reaction to metoprolol which belong to Beta blocker group of drugs and so does the bisoprolol.

As she has developed irregular rhythm for the first time so before advising you with any other drug I would like to suggest you to repeat an ECG again to see whether she is still in AF or not and also get her blood pressure checked.

Probably she had a Paroxysmal AF and if presently she is in sinus rhythm and her heart rate is normal then she won't need any medicine.

Right now do not start any medicine and get one ECG done first and upload it to me along with her bp readings so that I can guide you in a right direction.

I hope this information will be helpful. I will be waiting for your response with fresh ECG.

Kind Regards
