Can Carbocisteine Cause Tinnitus?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: I take Carbocisteine 375MG capsules three times a day and was advised to increase it to two capsules three times a day. I now notice my hissing tinitus has increased. Is there any alternative that helps bring up mucous, but will not affect tinitus?

Brief Answer:
Use N-Acetylcisteine 600mg twice/daily.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your health question.

Tinitus it is not one of the side effects of Carbocysteine, so make sure that it is not getting worse from other reasons that you need to treat.

But if you know for sure that that is a side effect from Carbocysteine, then ok. I would suggest to try N-Acetylcisteine 600mg twice/day instead of it. They have the same mechanism of action, but Acetylcysteine it is tolerated better.
Some side effects that you may have from it though are nausea, vomiting or allergic reactions. But as in every medicine you may not have any of those, so it will depend on how your body will tolerate it.

Hope this is helpful.

What I forgot to ask if there is an alternative for Ciprofloxicin. I never linked the tinitus with any medication until reading about Ciprofloxicin can increase tinitus and possibly cause it. I now remember the tinnitus did increase when taking Ciprofloxicin. Over the last eighteen months I have seen different chest clinic consultants at most appointments. One stopped my GP prescribing Ciprofloxicin, but didn't suggest an alternative. He has given me Amoxicillin which are not as effedctive for my chest infections as Ciprofloxicin. So I would like to know if there is an alternative I can ask for which doesn't have the tinitus side effect. Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
Yes there are alternatives but are problem specific

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Yes, Ciprofloxacine can be the cause of tinnitus. Though I don't know of why you are taking it, for this reason I cannot suggest something you can use instead of it. Discuss this with your doctor and dont change the medication before he confirms it, because only he/they know your full medical history.

Of course there are alternatives. Levofloxacine it is a very good medicine, Almoxiclav, doxicycline, ect...very good antibiotics. But as I said they are recommended depending on your symptoms/problem and all your conditions and you will need a prescription for it.

Hope I answered your question.

All the best
