Question: I HAD A.FIB FOR 3 HOURS AND HAVE BEEN PLACED ON ELIQUIS FOR LIFE.. I AM 83 HAVE A MORPHINE PUMP FOR CHRONIC BACK PAIN.. I AM SCHEDULED FOR RADIO-FREQUENCY SACRO- ILIAC ABLATION I need to know the routine to taper and d/c the eliquis before the procedure to avoid cerebral embolism etc . THANKS SO VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND SKILLS.. I AN GETTING CONFLICTING OPINIONS FRON LOCAL CARDIOLOGISTS.. I am a physician md, facp

Thanks for your query.

Before invasive procedure, eliquis will have to be stopped at least 48 hours prior. Now, in you, though all the comorbidities have been mentioned, the risk of embolism is not low. So we need to cover that period with low molecular weight heparin like dalteparin. They can be given upto 12 hrs till the procedure. Then again restarted 12 hrs after the procedure. After that eliquis can be reinitiated.

If you can share the opinion of your cardiologists, then I can share my views on that also.
