Can HIV Be Contracted From Unprotected Intercourse?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Nov 2017
Question: Just looking for a peace of mind here..
I had a one night stand unprotected sex with a male of unknown HIV status. He did not ejaculate and I tested negative at 38 days post-exposure on a rapid HIV test. Is that accurate?

Also, I swallowed the ejaculation of a male with unknown HIV status. I did not see any sores on his penis and there were no open sores in my mouth that I am aware of. I have become increasingly anxious and am constantly checking my lymph nodes for swelling. What is the risk of contracting HIV in this case? He says he is negative but I can't be sure. I know they say oral sex is less of a risk, but am I worrying for nothing?

I had developed a sore throat a few days after swallowing and now have a stuffy nose/ mild sore throat, but have not had a fever or developed a rash

And how soon after this exposure can I be tested rapidly and it be considered accurate?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

For the first instance, unprotected sex with someone with unknown HIV status poses a significant risk. HIV tests can result as false-negative up to 6 months out, so you will need to be tested again up to 6 months out from exposure.

For the second instance, the risk of contracting HIV without exposure of infected bodily fluid to an open sore of yours is very very low. I would visit a doctor for rapid HIV testing which will need to be repeated monthly up to 6 months out at which point you can safely say you are not infected.
