Can HIV Be Contracted Through Intercourse While On PREP?
Question: I was raped about 5 months ago. I was put on HIV PREP to reduce chances of HIV transference. About 20 days into PREP I had sex with my boyfriend and the condom had come off during and we hadn't noticed. I have been tested twice for HIV since and the results have been negative each time. Is there a chance that I could have transferred HIV to my partner during our sexual encounter without ending up infected myself?
Brief Answer:
NO!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.
There has been sufficient time since the rape and condom coming off. If you were already infected or was infected at that time, the test would have been positive already. Your results are definitive and you are not HIV positive be it from the unfortunate rape instance or from your boyfriend.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

So there's no way the HIV infection could have be present and since I was on the HIV PREP it didn't take hold in me but could have been passed along?
Brief Answer:
PREP prevents virus growth and not kills virus!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
PREP will not kill viruses is present. PREP prevents any virus from developing. Therefore there was no virus in you and that is the reason why you are still test negative up date. Even if you had viruses, the number would have been too small to cause transmission onto your partner.
I wish you well.

Sorry. Last follow up. It was actually PEP and not PREP. Which I know works to keep the virus from duplicating and spreading. So by 20 days into PEP the virus (if it had been present) would have been too small to transmit or have rooted in me. Correct?
Brief Answer:
Sure!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
If anyone had to be infected, that would have been you first and not others. There is really no reason to get worried here. I know PEP (post exposure prophylaxis).
I wish you well.
