Can HIV Be Contracted Through Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Mar 2015
Question: Hello…I recently had sex with a person that is HIV positive. We used a condom and he is on the once a day pill but he had a cold sore that bled from time to time. We did have oral sex and kissed. I am concerned and I would like to know the likelihood of me contracting the disease this way. I plan to have a test and I want to know when I should get one to be accurate.

Brief Answer:
You have a 1 to 10 percent chance of contracting HIV infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Your partner might be on a prescribed dose of medications to control HIV. The viral load might be less but small amount of risk is always there.

2. There was use of condoms but you also had oral and kissed each other. He also had a sore that bled (location not described). This can put you at a risk of 1 to 10 percent. Chances are higher if he ejaculated during oral sex.

3. If it is still within 3 days since having sex, please approach your nearest HIV center and start taking post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for. HIV. These are medications specifically given top those exposed to HIV in the last 3 days.

4. You should get the 4th generation rapid test which detects both HIV-1/2 antibodies and p24 antigen at the end of 30 days and recommended for people in your situation. Please consult your health care team at your place and get tested as per latest HIV testing guidelines.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
