Can HIV Infection Be Transmitted Through Infected Needle?

Posted on Tue, 9 Aug 2016
Question: Hi Doctor
My wife is undergoing IVF and i had to undergo standard virology tests- Hiv, hepatitis and vdrl etc. All these have come to be non-reactive.

My concern is with the lad (Dr lal path lab in gurgaon). After the test was over, the technician took off the disposable gloves etc. i asked him to see if the insertion where he drew blood from was ok then. He quickly grabbed my elbow and kind of poked/ pulled skin close to the actual area (maybe right on top of it) with his bare thumb. He handed me back the alcohal-cotton and asked me to put for some more time. After a minute, he opened a small bandaid, again with his bare hands, and put it on my arm. As far as I know, his thumb etc was not oozing anything and were dry.

Still I am worried about this episode. Kindly advise.

Welcome to HCM.

You need not to worry at all about the incidence because there is absolutely no risk of HIV infection in your case and Dr. Lal path lab is very reputed one so don't get feared or anxious and forget about the episode. Thanks Doctor.

I do realise HIV is very fragile. My only concern was if he had tested a positive person before me and did something similar with him/ her, and then poked my needle-point with his thumb after a few minutes?

Though I was also concerned about other infections...

Thanks and best regards
