Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
One gets Hantavirus infection by breathing in or coming into contact with the excreta of deer mouse, the white-footed mouse, the rice rat or the cotton rat which may be infected with the virus. If you were walking bare footed, it is possible if the dead mouse was infected. With shoes on, this does not occur normally.
