Question: Hello Doctor, I delivered the baby normally on 13th April.
However, I have fever with 100 DG , can this be related to my recent delivery or normal weather based sickness and whether it is safe to breast feed my child in fever
She also has strong Hiccups like 10 to 15 mins, is it ok or it requires some treatment,
Is it safe to give gripe water(dabur janam ghutti) as recommend by midwifes when we suspect some stomach related issues like gas build up etc or is there a separate drug to treat stomach related discomfort
Brief Answer:
Continue breastfeeding
Detailed Answer:
Namasthe

Dear Ms. XXXXXXX
Presence of maternal fever is definitely not a contraindication for breast feeding a neonate. You can safely take Paracetamol for fever.
Maternal fever could be due to many of the causes . If the following criteria are fulfilled there is no cause for concern
1. No foul smelling vaginal discharge
2. No pain in abdomen
3. No urinary complaints like burning urination, increased frequency of urination.
If the fever persists for more than 2 days or you notice development of above symptoms , consult your Gynecologist for further management.
Moving to the issue of your kid, please note hiccups are very commonly seen in the kids especially new borns.
1. When the baby sucks milk, it not only sucks milk, but also air is ingested. This air causes distension of abdomen resulting in hiccups. The solution is feeding the baby with head slightly upward. Burp the baby during and after every feeds religiously.
2. Exclusive breast feeding for 6 months is recommended. Nothing else to be given, no gripe water, no water or anything else. Mother's milk is nectar for the baby.
Follow good breast feeding habits and proper burping, the baby will not require anything else.
I hope all your concerns have been addressed. Will be glad to assist you in case you need further information. Wishing you happy and safe motherhood. Enjoy these days.
