Can Ibuprofen Cause Stomachache Or Heartburn As A Side-effect?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Nov 2017
Question: I do not usually take any pain meds but last Tuesday morning I took one 800 mg ibuprofen and that night I took two more 800 mg Ibuprofen at the same time. They were from a prescription for me from 2013. I woke up with bad stomach/heartburn pain which has lessened every day but its Sunday and still there. I am a heavy coffee drinker and often drink what's left from yesterday's pot. I stopped drinking coffee or alcohol on Friday afternoon and have also been taking Tums to see if that would help. I have no visible blood in my stool (normal every day) or urine. I have not felt really nauseous except for waking on Wednesday morning for a brief time. Never vomited. What I do feel is I think like heartburn (don't normally have this), a pain in my mid to upper chest. I have no heart issues or other medical issues except for osteoporosis and hematuria in my blood (I am seen yearly by a nephrologist for watching this).

*Is there something more serious going on or is this just wearing off?
* If so, how long should this take? I can't believe I still feel bad over 4 days later.
* Is there anything else I can do to help feel better?

Brief Answer:
Take Omeprazole 20mg daily.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this. This is ibuprofen induced gastritis. Take omeprazole 20mg daily for the next 10-14days.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

1. Will this just go away if I don't take the omeprazole and how long would it take?

2. Will just waiting it out make it worse on my stomach in the long run?

3. I don't like taking meds when I read the side effects.

Brief Answer:
See below!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

1. If the pain isn't that worrisome, you may just wait and see it regress totally. In future, avoid Ibuprofen.

2. If you have discontinued it, there is no further reason to be worried as aggression also stops.

3. Your concerns are genuine and medications should be the last option and not necessarily the first option.

I wish you well.
