Can Metoprolol Cause Weakness And Tiredness?
Question: I have been taking metoprolol tartrate 50mg tabs for years and my primary provider upped it to 100mg .now I feel weak and tired most of the time . I feel it is time to switch to a different medication that does not tire me out .What is your opinion
Brief Answer:
ACE inhibitor
Detailed Answer:
Dear Ma'am, I have gone through your question and I understand your concerns .. metoprolol is a beta blocker that can cause the side effects of dizziness, tiredness and drowsiness. It is also not recommended for patients above 60 years of age as it might cause slowing of the heart rate..
I would recommend that you switch to an ACE inhibitor such as captopril which is well tolerated and is not expected to cause similar side effects..
Another possibility is angiotensin II receptor blocker such as losartan but it can cause the side effect of persistent cough and needs monitoring of the potassuim level level of blood as it might cause hyperkalemia.. I hope you find this possible
