Can Minocycline Cause Anxiety?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Sep 2016
Question: I am a 63 yr old male that has been on minocycline for a month. This antibiotic Has caused me anxiety/tenseness and I am coming off it.I recently commenced walking twice a day for a solid 45 minutes. After a couple of days noticed an increase in my urinary frequency.About 5 days ago after drinking much water and probably too much beer I had frequent urination the next morning which lasted for about 4 hours. The next day the symptoms subsided but after drinking a few beers that night again the next morning I had frequent urination.Today has been similar but only consuming water during the day albeit a reasonable quantity. The urine has been clear on all times . Prior to drinking the water I have felt as though urine or whatever tension at head of my penis. The drinking of the water seems to flush this feeling away.Hope that makes sense. I normally sleep 7 to 8 hours without a bathroom visit and whenever I do go at night only once a night. I recently had my blood tests and nothing abnormal. Is it possible to have yeast infection that may cause this and you offer any other assistance please ?

Brief Answer:
Send the reports for an expert opinion.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist,i can understand your concern.

First of all, you've not written, why you were taking Minocycline for a month.
What makes you feel,that you've a yeast infection ?

Your blood test reports need to be sent here, for an expert opinion.
Is the frequency of passing urine, your main symptom or worry.

Keep in mind, that a healthy adult, needs to drink about 8-10 glasses fluids daily.
But if your fluid intake increases, you'll need to pass urine more frequently.

Send all the reports you have with you.
Wish you well.

Sorry I do not have my blood tests. They are with my doctor but she advised all ok. I was on the antibiotic for scalp acne . I though a yeast infection may be from combination of antibiotics and too much beer and that may be a factor. My main concern is the sudden increase in urination more than normal during the day and especially last few days. The side effects of minocycline did cause me also increase anxiety .Unfortunately , I have only that to report as all written reports with my GP.Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
Prostate gland enlargement or urinary infection are likely causes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Your assumption of beer and antibiotics, causing yeast infection,is unfounded.

As your concern is about frequency of urination, get examined by an Urologist.
A prostate enlargement or urinary infection,is a possible cause for your symptoms.

Do the following tests. You can send the reports here for an expert opinion.
1. urine routine and culture.
2. blood routine,creatinine,RBS,LFT,PSA and platelets.
3. Uroflowmetry.
4. Ultrasound-KUB,with residual urine and a TRUS (trans rectal ultrasound scan).

According to the reports,an advise regarding further treatment can be given.
Wish you well.
