Can Miralax Cause Semi Solid Stool In A Child?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Jul 2015
Question: Can using Miralax for my 3 year old cause pasty poop?
If so, how do I remedy? Does she need more water? Less miralax? More miralax? She is potty training and this does not help matters. But without the miralax she gets horribly hard stools that are difficult to pass.

Brief Answer:
toilet training with balanced use of dietery change and enema/laxative

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Miralax contains polyethylene glycol and is a form of laxative.
It draws water from the intestine and thus causes less formed pasty poop.
Long term use of laxative may cause dependence,fluid/mineral imbalance and recurrence of constipation once it is stopped.

In this toilet training age i would suggest to encourage the child to attend the toilet twice/thrice daily for 5-10 minutes, preferably after meals to take advantage of the gastrocolic reflex.

Dietery modification has an important role in management of constipation.Give her fruit(pear, peach, apple) juices as this helps in bowel movement.Avoid cow milk.Give more of fibre rich diet.A balanced diet including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and an abundance of fluids will be helpful.

Try to avoid using miralax. You can use enema intermittently after consulting your physician as it is a better choice rather than pronged use of miralax.Do not use excess of mirena or more frequently than prescribed.
As this is toilet training period the toilet training with balanced use of dietery change and enema/laxative is needed.
I hope this helps.
Please do ask if you have any further query.
Regards

Trying to balance her diet has been a nightmare. She REFUSES fruits and vegetables, with the exception of avocado. She use to drink apple juice, but not anymore. We supplement with Pediasure Nutritional Shake. She IS really good about drinking water as her primary drink throughout the day. She does usually drink 8-16 oz of 2% milk in addition to the Pediasure. Should we limit or eliminate the milk?

Unfortunately, she loves cheese and pasta. We limit her cheese intake and buy whole grain pasta meals. She also eats oatmeal and fiber-one fiber bars. We have tried fruit smoothies, without success. Please advise. Thank you

Brief Answer:
You can try giving soya milk instead of 2% milk

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for follow up

Children of this age are really fussy and choosy regarding feeds.
I would just suggest you to try your level best for dietary modification.
Its good to know that she loves drinking water(you don't need any extra efforts for it).
In my practice I have found that children who are predominantly on cow milk and constipated respond well once the cow milk has been replaced with soya milk(replace 2% milk with soya milk). There is no harm in giving pediasure.
Apart from this encourage her for toilet training and avoid regular use of miralax.
You can use it intermittently or better use enema.
All the best.
Wish you and your family good health.
Regards
