Can Mucinex Be Taken For Cough And Chest Tightness?
Mucinex may help.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,
It's hard for me to know what is going on with you without a more complete history and exam. But you can try Mucinex - with a lot of water. It works by drawing water to secretions which thins them out.
If your cough is productive of discolored sputum and if you have a fever, then you may need to go in for a chest X-ray. But otherwise you can try the Mucinex. If you find that you are getting worse (such as increased fever) then do go in to be examined.
In addition to Mucinex, hot tea and broth, and vitamin C (with or without zinc) may make you feel better too. Be sure to get plenty of rest to allow your immune system to do it's job.
I hope this information helps and you feel better soon.

Detailed Answer:
The Mucinex Chest Congestion Relief has 600 mg of guaifenesin which is a mucolytic as I described previously.
The Mucinex DM has the 600 mg of guaifenesin plus dextromethorphan - which is a cough suppressant. So if the frequency of coughing is a problem, then you can try this preparation.
It is reasonable to self treat, but if you feel you are getting weaker or short of breath (or fevers), do go in to be seen.
Best regards.
