Can Omeprazole Be Taken In Place Of Prilosec?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jun 2016
Question: I had an endoscopy test last year and you noted a stricture and stenosis of my esophagus and dysphagia. It was recommended that I take non-prescription Prilosec daily. I have been taking it and have not had any difficult swallowing or acid reflux. I have been reading about potential side effects of Prilosec and I was wondering if it would be prudent to try lower dosage omeprazole. I found Zanprol in 10 mg tablets. Do you see any downside to trying the lower dosage to limit the side effect risk?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Yes, if symptoms are improved then lowering the dose would be an appropriate option. PPIs are associated with a number of long term adverse effects and associations including osteoporosis, hypomagnesemia, gastric atrophy and C diff associated diarrhea.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
