Question: Is there a danger of Kidney conditions from taking omeprazole? Can it cause high Creatinine? Can it cause Kidney cancer or other kidney conditions? XXXXXXX YYYY@YYYY

Thanks for your query.

Previously these drugs were thought to be harmless to the kidney. But now from large population based studies it has been shown that risks of rising creatinine are higher if these drugs are taken for long time.

Fortunately the absolute risk is not that high. If risk of having chronic kidney disease in patients not taking these drugs is 10%, then with them it is 13%. There is no risk of cancer known so far.

So if not absolutely indicated, their use should be limited to short term.
