Question: I am having a Colonoscopy in two days time. Is it OK to take Oxyconton and Endone as I have a severe back pain problem and going off them suddenly will cause withdrawal symptoms as I have been on them for quite some time
Brief Answer:
yes its ok
Detailed Answer:
it is ok to take them up until the night before your colonoscopy. For the colonoscopy you are given anesthesia and therefore these anesthetics will interact with oxycontin / endone or any other medications, and may have an additive effect.
The morning of the procedure, if you are in pain you can let the nursing staff and doctor know as soon as you arrive, and they will likely give something for pain through the vein. it also depends on the time you are getting your procedure. If it's secheduled early in the morning it should not be a problem for you to be without your pain meds that morning. if the procedure is in the afternoon, you may want to take your pain meds very early in the morning (at least 4 hours before the procedure).
Keep in mind that all these pain medications cause constipation, and therefore decrease the success of a good colon cleansing. So follow all the steps for the colon preparation as instructed by your doctor.
hope that helped, let me know if you have further questions or concerns
