Can Promethazine And Codeine Be Taken For Cough With Phlegm While Having Pneumonia?

Question: my son was diagnosed with slight pnemonia he finished the course of levaquin for 10 days ...finished the prednisone and is still taking the nebulizer with liquid albuterol the dr also gave him promethazine with codeine. .he coughs in the morning but not for the rest of the day or night ..my question is does the promethazine with codeine loosen up the cough or is it harmful to take?

Thanks for writing to Health Care Magic, I am Dr Muhammd Ahmad, I have closely read your question and I understand your concerns, I will hereby guide you regarding your health related problem.

In my opinion your son is getting improved there is just morning cough left which is hopefully going to subside in a week or so. Yes promethazine and codine do relieve cough and promethazine also has antiallergic properties in addition. These drugs can be used in combination. There safety profile is quite fine in combination.

I would suggest you to make your son use these medication till his doctor suggests, according to the situation you described, in my opinion he will soon get relieved of the cough he is having it kight take about a week but things are heading in the right direction.
