S adenosylmethionine is considered safe
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic. I am a Clinical Pharmacologist and will try to assist you as best as I can within my specialty.
It is widely taken for osteoarthritis. Most studies on S-adenosyl methionine consider it as a safe adjunct to non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. Its efficacy in osteoarthritis and side effect profile are considered less than these pain killers.
One isolated study in cisplatin treated mice showed its harmful effect on kidneys. In these mice both Blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine raised steadily. But its effect on human kidneys is lacking.
As precaution you may regularly track the levels of BUN and Serum creatinine. Though it can also be measured by special tests like HPLC, such tests are usually only available for research purposes.
Theoretically it may increase metabolism of some drugs thus their blood levels and efficacy may decrease.
As such, most supplements are not well studied. Thus they may have known or unknown side effects.
If you really need to take it, you can try it in lower doses.
Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
