Can STD Infections Be Contracted Through Protected Intercourse?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Dec 2015
Question: Hi, I was in amsterdam last july and went to a sex worker and had protected sex, i am worried if there is a risk of std transmission, because there was vaginal fluid near the base of the condom and over the shaft and i wonder if it must have seeped through the condom from the base to the tip of the penis(inside the condom) and there was redness near my pubic area till the shaft when i went and checked after going home

Brief Answer:
I suggest you to screen for STDs

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I have understood it.

Protected sex is safe in terms of risk for transmission of Hiv, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea provided the condom stayed intact and was well fitting, which would ensure that no secretions would seep from the base to tip of penis.
However, STDs like Genital Herpes, HPV, Molluscum Contagiosum and Syphilis can still be transmitted despite protected sex because a condom covers only anterior portion of shaft of penis and therefore leaves a lot of genital skin i.e base of shaft of penis Or pubic skin exposed for skin to skin contact Or contact with infected secretions of sexual partner.
Since your sexual encounter was in july therefore I suggest you to take a blood test for genital herpes, syphilis as well as Hiv. You can take these tests even today as you are well past the window period of detection by lab tests.
Moreover since STD's like Genital herpes, Hpv and Molluscum can remain silent for weeks or months therefore, in case if you notice Or in future develop any genital sores or warts/ growths on genital region, I suggest you may get it reviewed with a dermatologist.

Thank you for the prompt reply doctor! I am curious about hiv, the condom was intact when i removed my penis after intercourse but have doubts if the fluid must have seeped inside, what are the chances of it and what are the risks if it seeped!!?

Brief Answer:
You may take up a Rapid test for Hiv

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

A condom is elastic and usually fits well in an erect penis and it is unlikely that any fluid/ secretions would seep under it. This scenario is unlikely.
If in any case you have doubts you may get yourself tested with a Rapid test (Spot test). This test is extremely accuarte at 12 weeks onwards sexual contact and therefore, a negative test at this stage would eliminate all your fears regarding Hiv.
If i assume that it seeped, it would amount to unprotected sex. Chances of Hiv from an unprotected peno-vaginal sexual encounter are about 0.03%.
