Posted on Fri, 18 Nov 2016
Question: My mother 99 yrs old has artheritis pain and has been prescribed tramadol which relieves some of the pain in her right leg and shoulder, Today there is some pain int he neck area. Today meloxican was added. Two weeks ago, she was given hydrocodone in ER for pain which was by then a 10. She was taken off due to hallucinations. Her doctor has been with her for many years and is not available this weekend. I am concerned about the interaction of this new med
with tramadol because she's very sensitive t these kinds of meds.

Brief Answer:
Should not be taken together

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting the query.

I understand your concern about your 99 years old mother.

Tramadol and hydrocodone are potential pain relievers and both have effects on the central nervous system. Meloxican is relatively safer but still it is strong enough for a 99 years old woman.

Tramadol and hydrocodone taken together can have synergistic effects and cause epilepsy, convulsions, siezures, breathing problems, and other side effects. So both of them should not be taken together.

Even if the pain is severe, give her only one of the two medicines at a time. Comparatively, tramadol is safer considering her old age.

You can use pain killer skin adhesive patches that can be pasted on her skin. These patches have lesser side effects as compared to oral tablets and should definitely be considered. No need to give oral tablets if these patches work for her.

I hope this answer was useful .
