Can Vancomycin For Treating C. Diff Cause Kidney Problems?
Question: I have taken flagyl for 10 days and then for 14 days to get rid of C-dif caused by too much antibiotics given for a infection due to ant bites. My c-diff has now returned and the doctor prescribed 14 days of vancomycin 125mg/4per day. I have not started to take them yet as I read they may cause kidney problems. I am 66 and in excellent health other than the c-dif. Should I take the vancomycin? I am travelling and can not reach the prescribing doctor. I have been taking progen3 probiiotic and natural greek yogurt and that seems to help the stomach. thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
The dose of Vancomycin prescribed for you is the standard dose for C.difficicle infection.
The incidence of toxic reaction on the kidney is less than 1% and it occurs mainly with injections of Vancomycin rather than tablet.
So your risk of harm to the kidneys is very low.
You can continue to take probiotics and yogurt even when you are on Vancomycin.
Do get back to me if you have further questions.
