Can Xarelto Be Taken In Place Of Warfarin?
Question: Hi! My husband has had 3 heart attacks in his life and a stroke. He has been on warfarin for 40 years on doses of up to 15mg daily. Recently he had a pacemaker and fibrillator put in. His doctor changed his tablets from warfarin to Xarelto 20mg 2 weeks ago. 3 days ago he had an episode like a heart attack and on an ECG today it showed some abnormal heart activity at that time. My question is could the change from warfarin to Xarelto have caused a problem?? He has also been on champix to stop smoking for 3 months. I am really concerned about this. Can you offer any suggestion here??
Brief Answer:
Xarelto and Warfarin have the same effectivity
Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs,
Xarelto has the same effectiveness as the Warfarin and less side effects. So changing Warfarin to Xarelto could't cause such symptoms.
Actually Champix could worsen cardiovascular diseases theoretically, although it is not proven clinically yet.
So my advise will be to continue Xarelto, stop Champix and wait for the blood tests results.
Hope I could help you
