Can A Lifetime Working With Hay Cause Lung Infiltrates?
Question: Can a lifetime of working with fresh produce cause lung infiltrates and how XXXXXXX are these?
Brief Answer:
Yes they do cause a disease called farmers lung
Detailed Answer:
Hi Billandgen,
Thanks for your query,
Yes lifetime working with hay may cause a disease called farmer's lung. This is due to a mold present in the hay. Drying of the hay before processing may reduce the incidence. symptoms usually are shortness of breath and persistent dry cough.
Those people who are consistently working must go for annual lung check up in the form of a central breathing test called spirometry which is a simple breathing test, cheaper and easy to do.
Best wishes

Would being a produce manager in a grocery store for 45 yrs. have the same result?
Brief Answer:
depends on the degree of exposure
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for follow up,
It depends on the degree of exposure to hay or floor. So if manager is exposed sufficiently he may get the disease but if he is sitting in chamber only then may not get the disease.

What is the life expectancy for an untreated infiltrated lung?
Brief Answer:
Depend on assessment of lung function
Detailed Answer:
This depends on the degree of lung compromise. Some tests are done to assess the lung fuction like 6 min walk test, spirometry. and based on the reports expectancy is calculated. If in initial phase and a good lung function, cessation of exposure increases the longevity.
