Can Activated Charcoal Be Used For A Long Duration?

Question: I am having Activated Charcoal and Probiotics for a few days and its helping me a great deal feeling light, preventing the fatty part of the food, decreasing gas and regularizing my bowels. I am benefited to a great extent. Can i continue having charcoal for a longer period of time. I also heard that charcoal helps reduce the LDL and Cholesterol and also is a great detox. pls advice.

As per your query sir-
Activated charcoal is safe for most adults when used for short-term. However taking it regularly for long terms may cause severe constipation however on a serious note it can also cause complictions like intestinal blockage but very rarely.Its much safer then most of the modern medicines so in optimal doses you can use it for long periods also.Principle of activated charcoal is simple it has low-volume pores that increase the surface area available for adsorption with its ability to absorb most poisons, charcoal can be very effective in soaking up the less harmful, but uncomfortable, acids and gases that accumulate in your gut.Dose should not be more then 50 to 100 grams one time.

Some researches says that activated charcoal absorbs toxins and impurities due to its stickiness however better trials are required to prove it.Hence though its believed that its good for detoxifying yet a proof can't be presented so i would refrain from making a professional comment on that (however in reality it do that).

As per the trials published by NCBI- In a cross-over study 7 patients ingested charcoal 4, 8, 16 or 32 g/day, and finally XXXXXXX each phase lasting for 3 weeks. Serum total and LDL-cholesterol were decreased (maximum 29% and 41%, respectively) and the ratio of HDL/LDL-cholesterol was increased (maximum 121%) by charcoal in a dose dependent manner. So no doubt its effective in treating dyslipidemia also.However mechanism of action is not clear till date.

As told previously some trials say that it help in detoxification of body by absorbing toxins and poisinous gases from gut however no good trials are done on this topic.


Actually the problem behind research is that now days a number of options are there available for both dyslipidemia as well as gut problem.These options are a way more effective then charcoal hence no one is conducting trial on this.As profits are not huge no one is conducing trials and researches(sad fact) as most of the trials are funded by big pharma companies who works for profit.

Some suggestion though not asked by you-
As you look interested in natural and detox product a few recommendations are-
Arogyavardhini Vati - Very effective in controlling lipid profile used in ayurvedic medicine.In a 20 months trial conducte by NCBI-The serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides were determined at the start and at the end of treatment.
" There was a significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides, whereas there was a significant elevation in the HDL level".

Just out of curosity would mention one of the latest trials conducted in canada- A group of 40 people having uncontrolled diabetes blood pressure and multiple ailments were given raw food for 45 days.
At the end of this trials most of the parameters (which can't even be controlled by most potent medicines) were in control.
For raw vegans i can personally assure you you could feel the change in 30 days.

I am continuing with minimal dosage of Activated Charcoal although somehow i have never faced any constipation while using it. Actually my bowels were smoother after consuming activated charcoal somehow.

I will procure Arogyavardhini Vati next time when i visit XXXXXXX

I also consume Curcumin Extracts marketed by NOW Nature Products for few days a week. Curcumin as you know is found in Turmeric roots and is a great antioxidant and malignancy prevention med.
