Can Alcohol Withdrawal Cause A Seizure?
Question: My friend, who has been alcoholic for several years, was admitted to the hospital with bilateral pneumonia. She had to be iintubated. At some point she lost consciousness and stayed unconscious for approximately one week. Upon regaining consciousness she was exhibiting stroke like symptoms. It has been three weeks now and her condition only seems to deteriorate. They have done a CAT scan and it was negative for stroke. Could she have had a seizure from alcohol withdrawal which caused brain damage? She continues to have sudden fevers for no apparent reason and they have to put a G-tube in her because she cannot swallow. Her muscles are like limp noodles. I am at a loss here any advice would be so helpful as she is in one of the worst hospitals in western Massachusetts. She has also been tested for blood infection and that was negative as well.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
I understand your concern.
I am Dr. Arun Tank, infectious diseases specialist, answering your query.
I suspect a pneumonia and secondary hypoxia due to pneumonia is the causative reason behind her consciousness. But following information can be helpful for me.
As she is in the ICU she has been investigsted for various test. Can you please attach that reports to me.
Report of culture and sensitivity, blood gas analysis if present can help me much to help you further.
I will be happy to answer your further concern, you can ask me on bit.ly/DrArun.

She has been moved out of the ICU, and has rapidly declined. The doctors that are treating her do not know why she is failing, as all the testing they have done has thus far been negative. She is confused and at times combative. She can't walk, and has difficulty speaking. She is exhibiting neurological abnormalities and I am not sure they have consulted a Neurologist yet either. As I said in my first question, this is a very awful hospital, and unfortunately no good doctors stay there very long. I still think that she might have had a seizure due to alcohol withdrawals. I know the CT scan was negative for stroke, but will a seizure show up on one? I am getting extremely nervous.
Brief Answer:
Alcohol withdrawal therapy, oxygen saturation help
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
In my opinion the seizure and unconsciousness has dual origin.
It occurs because of the alcohol withdrawal and the hypoxic damage occurs because of the pneumonia.
Because of pneumonia blood saturation of oxygen is not optimum. This low oxygen saturation induces hypoxic damage to the brain.
Due psychiatric counselling , alcohol withdrawal therapy and maintaining optimum oxygen saturation can help your friend come out of this adverse situation.

Thank you.
