Can Amniotic Fluid In A Newborn Cause Colic Or Colic Symptoms?

default
Posted on Mon, 25 Sep 2017
Question: Can amniotic fluid left in a newborns tummy cause colic or symtoms that mimic colic? When my granddaughter was born the doctor did not suction her. For days she puked up slime and now she cries a lot and is never content.

Brief Answer:
Amniotic fluid itself does not causes gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for asking on this platform

I can understand your concern.
Amniotic fluid per se does not causes gastritis unless it is stained with meconium(if baby passes meconium/greenish stool in utero).
Each and every baby swallows amniotic fluid when in womb. So this is a normal physiology. Suction is not needed in all the babies who cry vigorously after birth.
Meconium stained amniotic fluid can cause gastritis and in that condition stomach wash should be done by putting nasogastric tube.
Colic is very common in early infancy and till now it is not found to be related to amniotic fluid/meconium gastritis.
I request you to burp the baby properly after each feed to release the excessive gas as that may cause discomfort. Giving Colic drops contains simethicone also helps.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards
