Can Antidepressants Lead To Weight Gain?
Question: Hi I am 74 years old and have experienced considerable weight gain - 30 lbs. plus. I have cut down on my calorie intake, but find it very difficult to lose weight. I am 5' 3" tall. I take Nortriptylin, Sertraline, Lasix. Valsartan/Hctz, Ritalin, Atorvastatin, Levothyroxin and plus many supplements. Are the meds and/or the supplements causing the weight gain?
Brief Answer:
certainly yes.
Detailed Answer:
Hi. Thanks for your query and history.
Nortryptiline and sertaline are known to increase the weight
As also a underdose of Levothyroxin can cause the same.
Is it possible to reduce the dose of Nortryptilin and sertalin. At least to stop Nortryptilin.
When was the thyroid function tests done and what are reports?
It looks you may need a higher dose of Levothyroxin. How much is the blood pressure at the moment?
The supplements - although you have not mentioned here the names- can also cause weight gain. I hope your blood sugar is normal.

My blood pressure is 152/78. The supplements I take are: Centrum
Silver, Ocuvite, Co Q-10, Vitamin D3, Vitamin B High Potency Complex, Biotin, Acidophilus Probiotic, Fish Oil, Low Dose Bayer and Glucosamine/Chondroitin. I do not have Diabetis. The most recent blood work was at least 6+ months ago. I do not have the results with me. I'm in Florida and the test results are in New Jersey. How can I help myself to lose weight?
Brief Answer:
as advised
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
First of all stop Nortryptilin.
Get the Thyroid function tests done so that the dose of Levothyrox can be increased if necessary ( helps in extra-weight loss).
You already have cut down on your calorie intake, Start or increase the daily brisk walk/ other exercises which you can do or suits you.
I think all these things collectively will help you to loose the extra weight.
Thanks,
