Can Cholestryramine Be Used For IBS?
Question: Is Cholestryramine used for IBS? I have a friend with IBS and she said her doctor prescribed it and she is not having any problems.
Hello,
Thank you for posting a query.
Look, cholestyramine is a bile acid sequestrant. It is used to treat many conditions like hypercholesterolemia, pruritus due to any liver abnormality. It can also be used to treat chronic diarrhea caused by irritable bowel syndrome.
But, this drug is not so much effective in irritable bowel syndrome. Other antidiarrheal drug like loperamide should be used with the antispasmodic drug like dicyclomine group of drug. These drugs are very much helpful in preventing chronic diarrhea in irritable bowel syndrome.
Lastly, cholestyramine can be used in irritable bowel syndrome.
Hope this information suffices. Let me know, if you have any more question.
Regards.
