Posted on Tue, 28 Jun 2016
Question: Can drinking a day before liver function test cause abnormal result or is it something else? I drank excessively ending sunday at 4 am and had test monday at 1 pm. All other test results are normal ALT is 138 and AST 59. I am 30 year old female, 10 weeks post-partum, weigh 150. Have been fasting and was on sudafed cough and cold, xarelto, and biotin when tested. I also use the eyelash syrum lilash and had a cough/ cold.

Brief Answer:
Alcohol can interfere with test results, so can a few medications

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. The excessive alcohol intake can most certainly interfere with the test results, but I would recommend repeat testing in a weeks time, with complete absence of alcohol in your diet for this 1 week.

If the test returns a normal result then the raised values were purely from the excessive alcohol intake, but if the results are still above normal range then we should investigate further into the cause and diagnosis ma'am.

I hope you find my response helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

My B12 was also high with a value of 1515. Could this also be caused by the excessive drinking the couple days before or taking my vitamin which has 8 mcg of b12 that morning?

Brief Answer:
B12 raised in liver condition or kidney failure

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

Taking vitamin supplements cannot cause this elevated level. Elevated levels of vitamin B12 indicate either a liver condition (which we are suspecting in your case due to the alcohol intake) or kidney failure.

I hope this helps to answer your query ma'am.

Best wishes.

Is it possible that it is a temporary condition like the after effects of a binge or does it sound more like a serious problem?

Brief Answer:
Could be ma'am, hoping it is, but you should take better care

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

It could be a temporary condition, but at the same time it will require some medical attention. Also, it should raise a few red flags even if it is temporary and settles down on its own. You should take better care of your liver so that temporary (if it is temporary), condition doesn't become permanent.

Best wishes.
