Can Damiana Tea Be Consumed When On Medication For Depression And Anxiety?

Question: Due to depression and anxiety I am currently taking 60mg Citalopram,75mg Seroquel and 30mg mirtazapine and occasionally valium
Is it safe to drink tea made with Damiana or scutellaria Lateriflora or will either interact with the above medecines. Thank you

Thanks for writing to us.

Damiana is useful in depression as suggested.Being a herbal product it has no evident interaction. However it may increase the sugar level and affect diabetes. So if someone has diabetes, it should be taken with caution otherwise it is safe.

Scutellaria Lateriflora is used for stress and sleep. It is not going to interact with medicines you are taking. But it may increase the sedation overall as you are already on seroquel and miratazapin as well as occasional valium and all of them can cause sedation.

In conclusion after understanding above aspects it is safe to drink such tea.It is better to inform your treating doctor also about the same.
