Can Diabetes Be Confirmed By Just One Fasting Blood Sugar Test?
Question: Hi,
I have a friend in France who has asthma from the past few years. He recently had a nose surgery. After the nose surgery he complained of having a dry mouth all the time. The doctor asked him to get his blood sugar tested. His fasting fasting value came out to be 7.4 mmol/L . The doctor says that he is a diabetic now. But he has not had any sorts of symptoms like frequent urination, extreme thirst & hunger, tiredness etc. He is 27 years of age, tall white male, not at all obese.
My question is, does one fasting blood sugar test of 7.4 mmol/L confirm diabetes even though he has no symptoms? If yes, then what type is it? Type 1 or Type 2?
I am a type 1 diabetic myself since the last 8 years, and I know that type 1 comes with very strong symptoms. As for type 2, it seems very unlikely since he does not have type 2 running in his family and he is too young to get it. Kindly tell me what are the possibilities? Is it possible that his blood sugar might be elevated by some kind of asthma medication he might be taking after surgery?

Brief Answer:
I would redo the test
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
I would repeat the test. Sometimes the test may be false positive. So before coming to a conclusion, it is better to confirm the reports. He may also take oral gtt and HbA1C test.
If it is till raised, then diet and exercise would be the first step to control diabetes. Research has shown that asthma may increase the risk of developing diabetes. Many medicines are known to cause diabetes. Steroids that are usually taken for asthma may increase the risk of developing diabetes.
Hope it helps.
