Can Grapefruit Be Taken Without Taking Simvastatin Or Amlodipine?
Question: If I don't take my simvastatin or amlodopine today, can I have a grapefruit? If not, how will it harm me if I do?
Brief Answer:
Sure you can!
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
simvastatin is metabolized by the same mechanism in the liver as the grapefruit. This might induce some elevation of simvastatin levels due to reduced break-down. Please note though that the effect of grapefruit (for a glass of 150-200mL) is not that high. You're gonna need a lot more to severely impair simvastatin metabolism, although no guaranties can be given!
So if you do stop simvastatin for one day then there is no real danger from its use the next day...
The same applies for amlodipin as well.
Losartan is not affected by these pathways.
I hope I've helped!
