Can Hepatitis B Be Contracted Through Sneezing?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 May 2016
Question: Hi doctor,

Today I felt some pain in one of my eyes and asked one of the family members to check whether the pain was due to some dirt.
Unfortunately the person who was helping me sneezed right into my eye.
I suspect that some small amount saliva went into my infected eye by accident from someone who carries chronic Heptitis B. How big was the risk that I just became transmitted? The situation would be much simpler if I werent pregnant so tha I could have gone for a vaccine right away. What is your advice for me right now? Pregnant week 5.

Best Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
no danger at all!

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

please be reassured that hepatitis B does not spread through sneezing! There is absolutely no danger for transmission this way. Only sexual contact, blood contact or giving birth may transmit the disease.

Kind Regards!

Thank you for th rapid answer. I have in fact a follow up question. In four weeks time I have a booked trip to Asien. Would you suggest me to take a hepatitis vaccination to prevevnt any future risk, although during early pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
no real reason to vaccinate now

Detailed Answer:
You're welcome!

As I've pointed out, transmission may occur with sexual contact, blood contact or when giving birth. Traveling and visiting places and coming into any other contact besides the aforementioned ones won't result into transmission. Thus there is no serious reason to vaccinate at this time unless there are other reasons (besides the trip to Asia), although vaccination during pregnancy is feasible. Important reasons may include having an infected sex partner, using illicit intravenous drugs, having contracted another sexually transmitted disease, etc.

Kind Regards!
