Can High Triglycerides Increase The ALT Count?
Question: Hi Doctor,
My name is Mxxxxxy XXXXXXX and I am a 34 year old male. Over the past few years I have gained weight, almost 10 kilos (currently I am 88 kgs).
I have recently done my Master Health Check-up and following are my Cholesterol and Liver test results-
Heart (Cardiac)
Blood Tests as of 29 XXXXXXX 2017
Cholesterol Total 202
(Desirable <=200 mg/dL)
HDL Cholesterol 56
(Desirable >40 mg/dL)
Triglycerides 282
(Desirable <150 mg/dL)
T. Cholesterol/HDL Ratio 3.6
Desirable <5 (calc)
Direct LDL Cholesterol 114
(Desirable <=100 mg/dL)
LDL/HDL RATIO 2.0
VLDL CHOL, CALCULATED 56
LIVER Test results:
Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) 56
(Reference Range 10 - 40 U/L)
ALT (Alanine Transaminase) 113
(Reference Range 9 - 46 U/L)
Total protein 8.5
(Reference Range 6.2 - 8.3 g/dL)
Albumin 5.3
(Reference Range 3.5 - 5.2 g/dL)
Globulin (Calculated) 3.2
Reference Range 2.1 - 3.7 g/dL (calc)
GGT 36
(Reference Range <=65 U/L)
Albumin/Globulin Ratio 1.6
Reference Range 1 - 2.1 (calc)
Bilirubin Total 1.6
(Reference Range <1.3 mg/dL)
Bilirubin Direct 0.3
(Reference Range <=0.4 mg/dL)
My other test results are normal. However, I am mainly concerned about my high ALT count. Is it because of my increased Triglycerides? In the USG report it says Grade 1 fatty liver. In 2015 tests, my ALT count was 34 and AST was 22.I never had any liver problem nor does anyone in my family.
FYI, I am a non-alcoholic.
Please let me know how bad does my report looks? And what can be done to control it? Do I need to take any medicines?
Just to add, recently I have started taking Omega-3 Fish oil capsules to reduce my triglycerides levels.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
High ALT due to fatty liver
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
Your ALT is significantly high.
This could be possibly due to fatty liver.
Fatty liver in turn may be due to obesity and high triglyceride levels.
You need to reduce weight. Try to keep your BMI below 25.
To reduce triglycerides, in addition to weight reduction, continue taking omega 3 fatty acids.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.
