Question: Hello, should I drink tea, coffee if I have seronegative spondyloarthropathy? Any other herbal tea or spices to avoid?

Brief Answer: Arthritis with herbs and spices Detailed Answer: Dear XXXX Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern and following points are worth mentioning prior to Ayurveda management. 1. Arthropathy or any Rheumatic disease is consider under ‘AAM’ [AMA is toxic by product of improper digestion] and in Ayurveda Bones [asthi] are the main site of Vata and when this AMA gets deposited in bones, it combines with Vata to form AAMVATA or SPONDYLOARTHRITIS, so first line of treatment should be to improve digestion so that no further ama is produced. 2. New study from Georgetown University,has shown that drinking tea raises the risk of arthritis since tea leaves have a high level of fluoride and too much fluoride can cause arthritis and many other ailments. [and since water contains flouride so even brewing will only add to the suffering] 3. Coffee and Black Tea are considered toxic, since they contain caffeine which causes exhaustion of the adrenal gland by continuously secreting Adrenalin and thereby initially producing a steady state of active wellness i.e. "caffeinism" which is later characterized by fatigue, anxiety, mood swings, sleep disturbance, irritability and depression. 4. green tea since contains anti oxidants which are having anti inflammatory properties, helps in reducing inflammation and joint damage. 5. In Ayurveda [in terms of spices/teas] as far as I know, garlic, ginger, ghritakumari [aloe vera] have anti coagulant properties, so they should not b e consumed with modern anti coagulants [aspirin etc] since can increase the risk of bleeding], also chamomile tea, gingko, saw palmetto have the same effect [you may ask your primary care doctor for any exhaustive list] 6. If you will be advised for Immunosuppressive therapy make sure to exclude ginseng, yashtimadhu [licorice root], or zinc containing supplements. 7. avoid herbal laxative : sanay/swarnpatri [senna] instead prefer isabgol [pyllium] with plenty of fluids. hope I have given due consideration in taking up your case, any suggestions are welcome Dr. Munish Sood Consultant & Physician Naimittika

Dear Dr. Munish, thank you once again for your great explanation. May I clarify - green tea is ok to drink? I know it contains anti-oxidants, but it also contains caffeine, is it still ok? I am glad we don't have fluoridated water here in Europe.. I have heard of other effects it might have (calcification of pineal gland, if that's true, etc..) One more unrelated question - I have asked you one thing via Facebook which I didn't think was appropriate to ask here. If you think anything can be discussed here, please let me know. Thanks again. Brief Answer: Green Tea and Information Detailed Answer: Dear XXXX Thanks for reverting back with your concern(s) 1. here at my place Shimla[India] we people generally use 'TETLEY TEA' which is green tea with lemon/ginger/mint and is free of caffeine and is manufactured by TATA, in your city/town purchase green tea which has written 'decaffeinated' on it PS. Always check the label to ensure whether the effervescence or C02 process is used, since this process uses no chemicals, and retains 95 percent of the polyphenols. ii. Green tea teabags contain a lot more caffeine, try to buy loose green tea leaves. PS. since caffeine dissolves quickly thus make sure you discard first infusion [universal precaution] in which 80% caffeine is released in water. iii. Green tea contains catechins and theanine that reduce caffeine activity. PS. so drink it hot and never cold iv. Green tea apart from caffeine, does have two other stimulants also, these are theobromine and theophylline, and may increase the heart rate and excite the nervous system [so also take note of the following in any diseased conditions] but again the amino acid L-Theanine simultaneously calms the nervous system and enhances concentration abilities, thus somewhat restoring the balance. PS. Green tea which is labeled as "naturally decaffeinated" has been treated with the chemical solvent ethyl acetate. A healthier choice is green tea where the caffeine has been removed through a process of "effervescence" using carbon dioxide (CO2) and water. 2. Studies have shown increased pineal calcification [due to flourides] is significantly related to sleep disturbance and day time tiredness, since it reverses the wake/sleep schedule of the body. 3. Thank you so much, once again :) I was just wondering, if you have your thoughts/ideas on this - Chinese people consume a lot of green tea all their life, if I am not mistaken. Also, it is not decaffeinated I guess? I have read a lot about mechanisms and action of caffeine, also it seems to act very differently from my experience depending on whether caffeine is from coffee or from green tea, still this discussion on ill effects of caffeine is puzzling.

Brief Answer: Chinese Green Tea Detailed Answer: Dear XXXX Thanks for reverting back with your query and going by the place [china] following are the guidelines 1. since chinese people collect/make green tea from leaves and not tea bags and content of caffeine is lower in the former. 2. CAFFEINE: I. Coffee: 100 mg II.Green Tea: 20 to 30 mg [ but the health benefits far outweigh the small amount of caffeine in green tea] 3. presence of polyphenol in green tea speed up the metabolism while presence of limited caffeine acts as an appetite suppressant, thus the combined effect helps in weight loss [one probable reason of chinese people to maintain stable weight] 4. main effect of caffeine is CNS [Central Nervous System] stimulant i.e. stimulation of higher centres at low dose while toxic effects at high dose Dr. Munish Sood Naimittika
