Can Inconsistency In Taking On Tenex Cause Seizure?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Apr 2015
Question: I am a early intervention teacher of preschoolers with significant autism. One of my 4 year olds had a seizure over the weekend. He takes tenex twice a day, but his parents are very inconsistent about giving it to him. Could this be related? (I administer his morning medication M-F.)

Brief Answer:
Guanfacine usually don't cause seizures as side effect

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

Tenex is Guanfacine and the drug is commonly used in autistic disorders, in ADHD etc childhood disorders. If we go by pharmacology then Guanfacine is an alpha agonist drug which helps to improve the symptoms of Autism and ADD. In various studies it has been found to be having some anti-convulscent effects. Though some inconsistent case reports say that the drug may cause seizures in some but over the drug should not be the cause of seizures in that child.

He should undergo proper imaging of brain and other investigations to find out exact cause of his seizures. Low calcium is also one of common cause of such symptoms in young children.

Thanks. I hope this helps you. Please ask again for more doubts.
