Can Insufficient Sample Given For HIV Test Be Conclusive?
Question: Please assign this to Pathology doctor or Pathology specialist
Hi,
I had a HIV RNA Qualitative test for HIV1 and 2 in Lister metropolis, XXXXXXX due to other issues i didn't given my name correctly.
After 4 days i called them, they told me that the sample is insufficient. i got anxious and i asked them is the test is positive, do you want more sample to confirm. but they told it was insufficient.i spoke with the XXXXXXX head of Lister, but somehow she round my correct name and it looks like she found that i have given fake name.
but i have given the sample again and they ran the test in a day and send me the results and it was negative.
1. is there any possibilities that my initial test was positive, is it because they asked me the sample
2. will labs used to change the result if they got fake names like my incident.

Brief Answer:
Go for RT- PCR in case of doubt.
Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir
I can understand your concern.
First and foremost, insufficient sample will not give the reading at all.
Second, lab authorities will consider blood sample more rather than the "fake" names of the patient.
Third, a negative result will virtually rule out HIV.
Fourth, in case you still have a doubt, I advise you to go for RT- PCR test for 100% confirmation.
Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.
