Can One Get Encephalitis From Mononucleosis?
Question: could I have gotten encephalitis from mono? last week I was having sensations that I wasn't part of my body and that nothing was real. I was also very much in panic and had high anxiety. I feel better today but was diagnosed with mono. I have a little brain fog and hard time thinking straight. should I be worried after last week's symptoms?
Brief Answer:
Consultation
Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.
It is not really possible to get encephalitis from mononucleosis. What you are describing is instead classic for anxiety and panic. This is likely a primary anxiety disorder rather than being related to mono in any way. If these symptoms persist, you should be evaluated in-person by a psychiatrist to consider starting an SSRI antidepressant, which can greatly help treat the symptoms of anxiety.

does mono or any other viral infection cause cognitive side effects like the ones previously stated? Have you seen someone with a viral illness have a mental reaction such as the ones I described?
Brief Answer:
Followup
Detailed Answer:
No, mono does not cause cognitive side effects as you describe. You are having anxiety and panic. I have not seen a patient with a virus describing your symptoms, because viruses do not lead to these symptoms. I recommend you seek out treatment for anxiety.
