Brief answer...given below
Detailed answer....
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
There are around 7 oral chemo drugs being used for colon cancer.
In general the side effects of these drugs are..
Nausea,vomiting,diarrhea,loss of appetite,rashes,fatigue,increased chances of infection,anaemia etc.
Some drugs can raise blood pressure and can have effect on cardiac health but this doesn't happen quite often and moreover patients are always followed up for their side effects.
Since most of the drugs don't have well known cardiac or pulmonary side effects,it would be better if you ask about the particular drug or drugs.
I would be very happy to give you details regarding them.
I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks

He has been advised to take xleoda ( oral). Is asprin safe to take with chemo as he had a mild heart attak last year and also pulmonary embolism. Asprin helps blood from clotting right so gp had advised he takes this to prevent such risk

Hello,
XELODA is known to cause coronary artery spasm but rarely, however higher prevalence of XELODA induced toxicity has been seen in patients having previous coronary artery disease history.
Although it is advised to use it with caution in patients on blood anticoagulants like warfarin and Coumadin, but aspirin can safely be taken while on XELODA.

My dad had cea blood test may which was 3 and on XXXXXXX which was 4. Is this rise of concern?

Answered by Dr. Pavan Kumar Gupta (30 minutes later)
Hello,
Normal levels of cea are below 2.5 mcg/ l for non smokers and below 5 for smokers.
You need to keep repeating this test after every 4-6 weeks and a single jump from 3 to 4 is hardly significant.
A persistent little rise in the values does indicate a local recurrence and a quick rise above the levels of 20 are indicative of hepatic or bone metastasis.
Get the values repeated over next few months.
A persistent rise over next few months would definitely warrant a re evaluation.

But can cea rise by 1 point in 1 month ? My dad is a smoker
doctor
Answered by Dr. Pavan Kumar Gupta (12 minutes later)
Hello,
Value of CEA is 4 in your dad, which is considered as normal for smokers.
This rise of 1 point could be even because of heavy smoking in this period.
I don't think that there is anything to be of concern now.
As I said earlier,a constant further rise in next few months may mean something and not now.
Thanks
